i think romney is doing both and romney -- watching him right now is watching him go through the different phases of romney, 509s shades of romney shall we say. >> that's exactly what they have thought. so people have talked about this a lot. the notion of they were kind of a fork in the road in the spring. do we want to run against him as a flip flopping phony or run against -- coreless, their pitch before, or do we want to cast him as a right wing radical. they seemed to and did make a decision to do right wing radical and one on throughout. i talked about david plouffe about this in may and he said we're going do both when we have to. we're going to say mitt romney there he goes trying to flip flop, coreless a phony, but not forget where he actually is, and then this is -- we're going to keep trying to pin him back to these positions he's taken. i think they have been horrible since the debate, the obama campaign. they are -- jon ward understates the degree to which they are knocked off guard and they are flailing right now and the stuff they're saying, the big bird ad, all of it -- >>

and so does romney. >> this morning both sides are claiming victory and, indeed, everything may change in the next five days when president obama and governor romney take the stage again. but what biden did give is the president -- gave the president a path throwing his detractors off the scent and leading his best friend on the path towards victory. franklin, as the new guy at the table, i ask you first, did vice president biden get the obama campaign back in a place it wants to be? >> well, i'm not sure he got them exactly in the place where they want to be, but i think that he did help stem some of the damage. i think he made best bed wetting liberals like myself feel much better, that they had regained some of its offensive juju and weren't going to roll over why the rejuvenated romney walloped them. >> what was your assessment of paul ryan overall? we're going to get to specific sound but in terms of paul ryan and his debate skills last night, what -- how do you grade limb? >> i think what people are looking for when they are going to watch a debate like this, especially a young -

both sides said it. now there is an argument over what the facts are. when we talk about bipartisanship, how do you reach compromise? >> it's a fund mental problem for sure. also a problem when you have politicians who, frankly, have taken centrist positions, lot of positions. if you're going out there as mitt romney did and say, i am the bipartisan healer. i can find compromise, you cannot. you have to talk, communicate in ways that suggest you will do that. it's not enough to say, i'm strong, i'm a leader. you have to be reasonable in that debate. for him to say when the numbers come down they are outrageous. if the numbers are high, that's cool. that leaves you no room to find middle ground. you're poisoning the well for the next time you're in government and in office. that's the danger we have here. it's all short-term. everything we have seen especially from the romney campaign is about the group of people he's with at that time. he's a moderate guy in a debate talking to other people. the next day or with donors it's whatever you need. nos prague
